Key Points:

  • Sean Dyche dismissed after two seasons at Everton.
  • David Moyes returns as manager, 11 years after his initial departure.
  • Moyes aims to secure Premier League survival and assist in Everton’s rebuild.

Everton have announced the appointment of David Moyes as the club’s new manager, following the dismissal of Sean Dyche on Thursday.

Moyes, who previously managed the Toffees for over a decade from 2002 to 2013, returns to Goodison Park with the task of stabilizing the club during a critical period. His first stint at Everton saw the team consistently punch above their weight, finishing in the top five on three occasions and rarely facing relegation threats, despite the absence of silverware.

Since his departure in 2013 to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Everton have struggled for consistency, finishing higher than seventh just once and narrowly avoiding relegation in the last three campaigns.

Dyche managed to keep Everton in the Premier League twice but was relieved of his duties just hours before the club’s FA Cup third-round victory over Peterborough. The move comes three weeks after The Friedkin Group assumed majority ownership of the club, marking their first significant managerial decision.

Moyes: “Excited to Rebuild the Club”

Speaking to Everton’s official website, Moyes expressed his enthusiasm for returning to a club he knows well:

“It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club.
I’m excited to be working with The Friedkin Group and I am looking forward to helping them rebuild the club. Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team.”

Executive Chairman Welcomes Moyes

Marc Watts, the club’s new executive chairman, emphasized the importance of Moyes’ experience:

“We are pleased that David is joining us at this pivotal time in Everton’s history. With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to propel us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium. We look forward to working with David to build the foundation of a new era for Everton.”

Relegation Battle Looms

Moyes takes over with Everton precariously positioned just one point above the relegation zone. His immediate priority will be to widen that gap and ensure the team’s Premier League survival as the club prepares to transition into its new stadium.
