Chelsea’s Deadline Day Woes: Maresca Slams Fixture Scheduling
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has voiced his frustration over the Premier League’s decision to schedule matches on transfer deadline day, calling it “completely wrong” after his team suffered two key injuries in their clash against West Ham United.
Chelsea’s Striker Crisis Deepens
Both Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu picked up hamstring injuries during the deadline day fixture, leaving Chelsea with limited options up front.
- Jackson’s injury is more severe, with the Senegalese forward expected to be out until April.
- Guiu’s issue is less serious, but he will also be sidelined for the time being.
With these setbacks, Christopher Nkunku is now Chelsea’s only available striker, but the Frenchman is more effective as a supporting forward or winger.
Maresca: “It’s Impossible to Plan for This”

Maresca believes the current deadline day system does not allow clubs enough time to react to unexpected injuries, stating:
“It’s completely wrong. You finish a game, two key players get injured, and the transfer window closes an hour later. How can a club prepare for that?”
The Italian manager also pointed out how a similar situation with goalkeepers would cause even greater chaos, saying:
“Imagine if you lose your first-choice goalkeeper in the first half, then your second-choice in the second half. You’d be forced to play with a third-choice keeper for six months. That’s not fair.”
Chelsea’s Growing Injury List
The Blues are already missing several key players, including:
- Wesley Fofana (long-term injury)
- Benoit Badiashile (defensive concerns)
- Romeo Lavia (midfield absence)
With limited attacking options, Chelsea now face a challenging trip to Brighton in the Premier League, just days after their FA Cup defeat to the Seagulls.
