Sancho’s Struggles at Chelsea Raise Questions About His Future

Jadon Sancho’s loan spell at Chelsea has been far from impressive, and speculation is growing over whether the Blues will send him back to Manchester United this summer. With just two goals in 28 appearances, the England international has struggled to make an impact under Enzo Maresca, who recently addressed what the winger must do to improve.

Maresca’s Advice: Sancho Needs to Shoot More

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s crucial London derby against Tottenham, Maresca admitted that Sancho has underperformed but highlighted a specific area for improvement—his willingness to take shots.

“We create plenty of chances in attacking positions, but it’s up to the wingers to decide—should they cross, take on their defender, or go for goal? Jadon probably needs to shoot more, and we’ve encouraged him to do so repeatedly. Hopefully, we’ll see that change.”

Sancho has managed only 18 shots in 23 Premier League appearances this season, an average of 1.1 shots per 90 minutes—significantly lower than teammates like Noni Madueke (4.0), Pedro Neto (2.2), and Tyrique George (2.0). Even João Félix, who left for AC Milan in January, had a higher shot tally before his departure.

A Lack of Confidence or Tactical Issues?

Sancho’s reluctance to take on defenders and his low shot volume have sparked debates among fans and pundits. Is he struggling with confidence, or does Chelsea’s tactical setup limit his effectiveness? At Manchester United, he faced similar issues, which ultimately led to his loan move.

Chelsea’s upcoming clash with Tottenham will be a test of their attacking capabilities, but Maresca won’t place all the responsibility on Sancho. The return of Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, and Nicolas Jackson from injury will provide Chelsea with additional firepower.

What’s Next for Sancho?

With reports suggesting Chelsea can offload Sancho for a £5 million penalty rather than triggering his £25 million buyout clause, his future remains uncertain. Can he prove himself before the season ends, or is his time in London already nearing its conclusion?

What do you think—should Chelsea keep Sancho, or would he be better off returning to Manchester United?
