Elon Musk’s Interest in Liverpool FC
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has reportedly expressed interest in purchasing Liverpool Football Club. His father, Errol Musk, revealed in a recent interview that Elon’s desire to buy the Premier League giants is genuine, though no formal steps have been taken yet.
With a net worth exceeding £330bn, Musk has the financial power to make a significant impact in football ownership. Liverpool, known for its top-flight success and historic legacy, could become the next venture for the billionaire, who already owns SpaceX, Tesla, and X.
Family Ties to Liverpool
Errol Musk disclosed that the family’s connection to Liverpool goes beyond football.
“His grandmother was born in Liverpool,” Musk Sr shared. “We have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool, you know.”
Current Ownership and Valuation of Liverpool FC
Liverpool is owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which acquired the club for £300m in 2010. Under their stewardship, Liverpool transitioned from financial instability to becoming consistent challengers in the Premier League and Champions League.
In 2022, FSG opened the door to outside investments, emphasizing their interest in selling minority stakes rather than a full ownership transfer. However, with Manchester United recently selling a 27.7% stake for £1.2bn, a complete sale of Liverpool is estimated to cost between £5bn and £6bn—a sum well within Musk’s financial capabilities.
Is a Liverpool Sale Likely?
While Musk’s interest is apparent, Errol Musk cautioned that this does not confirm any imminent transaction.
“He would like to, yes, obviously. Anybody would want to—so would I!” Musk Sr joked, underscoring the allure of owning such a prestigious football club.
