Who is Chido Obi? Man Utd’s Rising Star

  • Manchester United signed Chido Obi at the start of the 2024/25 season.
  • 17-year-old Danish striker shattered youth goalscoring records.
  • Ruben Amorim handed Obi his senior debut against Tottenham.

Manchester United fans are buzzing about Chido Obi, a towering 17-year-old striker who has already made history at youth level. After choosing United over Arsenal, Obi has continued his impressive form and even earned his first-team debut under Ruben Amorim. But what makes this young talent so special?

Chido Obi’s Career Journey: From Denmark to Old Trafford

Early Beginnings in Denmark

Born in Denmark to Nigerian parents, Obi’s football journey began on a family trip to Nigeria when he was just six. A local coach noticed his talent and encouraged his father to get him into formal training. Back in Denmark, Obi joined KB (Kjøbenhavns Boldklub), where he quickly made an impression.

“He was quiet off the field, but loud on the field,” recalled coach Soren Nielsen.

Move to England & Arsenal Breakthrough

His family later moved to England, and after an impressive trial, he joined Arsenal’s academy. Obi quickly established himself as a goalscoring sensation, becoming the club’s record scorer at Under-18 level. His standout moment? A 10-goal performance against Liverpool, which went viral on social media.

Despite Arsenal’s efforts to keep him, Obi chose Manchester United, believing in their long-term vision for his development.

Manchester United & First-Team Debut

At United, Obi hit the ground running, scoring 12 goals in just nine games for the youth team. His rapid rise led to a senior debut against Tottenham, making him one of the youngest debutants in United history.

Chido Obi’s Strengths: A Natural Goalscorer

Chido Obi

1. Physicality & Power

Standing at 6’2″ (188 cm), Obi dominates defenders at youth level. His combination of strength, speed, and agility makes him a nightmare for opponents.

2. Clinical Finishing

His ability to find space and finish under pressure sets him apart. Denmark U21 manager Morten Eskesen praised his:

“Uncanny ability to position himself and finish with precision.”

3. Versatility in Attack

Obi isn’t just a penalty-box poacher. He’s comfortable in one-on-one situations, can run in behind defenders, and has a powerful shot.

“Chido has always had a knack for finding the net,” said former Arsenal coach Jack Wilshere.

Chido Obi’s Weaknesses: Can He Adapt to Senior Football?

Chido Obi

1. Physical Advantage Won’t Last Forever

Many young stars dominate because of their size, but the real test comes when facing fully developed professionals. Obi will need to adapt his game beyond just relying on physicality.

“I thought he’d be caught up at some point – but he never is,” said Soren Nielsen.

2. Mentality & Temperament

Some scouts have raised concerns about his reaction when things don’t go his way. However, this is common among young players still maturing in both football and life.

3. Unconventional Shooting Technique

Obi has a unique way of striking the ball, which some coaches have questioned. But as Arsenal scout Paul Aladejare put it:

“If it’s still ending up in the corner of the net, who cares?”

Which National Team Will Chido Obi Play For?

Obi is eligible to represent Denmark, Nigeria, and England. While he played for England U16, he has committed to Denmark at youth level.

“I was born in Denmark, I have better friends in Denmark, and I want to win the Euros or World Cup with Denmark,” Obi said in an interview.

Despite speculation, Obi has no plans to switch to England or Nigeria.

Chido Obi’s Role Model: Inspired by Rasmus Hojlund

Even before joining United, Obi admired fellow Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund.

“He is strong and powerful, so you can learn a lot from him,” Obi said.

Though their playstyles differ—Hojlund is left-footed, Obi is right-footed—both share an eye for goal. Could Obi follow in Hojlund’s footsteps and become United’s next great striker?

What’s Next for Chido Obi?

With a record-breaking youth career behind him and a first-team debut already secured, the future looks bright for Obi. But will he become a United star, or is it too early to tell?
