Disasi’s Marginalised Role at Chelsea

Axel Disasi, Chelsea’s £38.5m signing from AS Monaco in August 2023, is reportedly set for a January exit after struggling for game time under head coach Enzo Maresca. Despite playing 44 matches last season under Mauricio Pochettino, the 26-year-old French defender has made just five Premier League appearances this campaign, largely featuring in UEFA Conference League group stage fixtures.

Disasi, who signed a six-year contract upon arrival, is a versatile player capable of operating as both a centre-back and a right-back. However, his future at Stamford Bridge looks uncertain, with Chelsea and the player reportedly agreeing on a loan move before the end of the transfer window.

Villarreal Emerge as Contenders, Juventus Opt Out

Trevoh Chalobah

French outlet L’Equipe has identified Villarreal as a potential destination for Disasi, while earlier reports suggested interest from Juventus. However, Italian journalist Matteo Moretto has clarified that the Serie A giants are not pursuing the France international, as he doesn’t fit their desired player profile.

Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen were also linked with a move for Disasi late last year, and Aston Villa have reportedly shown interest as well. Villa manager Unai Emery is open to facilitating Diego Carlos’ exit, with Fenerbahçe showing interest, if a suitable replacement can be secured—potentially opening the door for Disasi.

Chelsea’s Defensive Shake-Up

Disasi’s marginalisation coincides with Chelsea’s efforts to address their defensive injuries. The club recently recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace, likely pushing Disasi further down the pecking order. Wesley Fofana’s season-ending injury and Benoit Badiashile’s ongoing absence have left Maresca short of experienced options. However, Levi Colwill has emerged as a dependable figure, starting every Premier League game this season.

Academy graduate Josh Acheampong is another player vying for minutes in Chelsea’s defence, further complicating Disasi’s prospects at the club.
