Why Is Jesus Vallejo Being Overlooked at Real Madrid?
Despite Real Madrid’s ongoing defensive injury crisis, long-serving centre-back Jesus Vallejo has remained on the fringes of the squad. Carlo Ancelotti has now provided insight into why the 28-year-old has barely featured this season.

Real Madrid’s Defensive Woes & Vallejo’s Curious Exclusion
Los Blancos have endured a nightmare season with injuries at the back:
- Eder Militao suffered his second ACL injury in two years.
- David Alaba faced another setback in his ACL recovery.
- Antonio Rudiger has now joined the injury list.
With their primary defensive options sidelined, midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has often filled in at centre-back, while youngsters Raul Asencio and Jacobo Ramon have been promoted to the first team.
However, despite Madrid’s struggles, Vallejo—who joined the club in 2015—has played just ten minutes this season, coming on against Alaves in September.
Ancelotti’s Explanation: Madrid Focusing on the Future
When asked about Vallejo’s absence ahead of Madrid’s clash with Manchester City, Ancelotti dismissed any personal issues, stating:
“Absolutely nothing is going on with Vallejo. The problem is that his contract is ending, and we prefer to give minutes to young players.”
The coach’s comments suggest that Madrid sees no long-term future for Vallejo and is prioritizing younger talent over a player who has struggled to hold down a place even during loan spells at Wolves and Granada.
What’s Next for Vallejo?
With his contract expiring, Vallejo is likely to leave Madrid this summer. The big question is: Where will he go next? Should he try to revive his career in La Liga, or seek a fresh start abroad?
