Key Points:

  • Manchester United suffered a 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday.
  • Captain Bruno Fernandes expressed concern about the team’s lack of confidence, which he views as the most troubling issue.
  • Despite dominating the first half and equalizing through a Fernandes penalty, United faltered in the second half.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has admitted that the team’s ongoing struggles with confidence are his primary concern following their 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

The Match

United started brightly but fell behind early to a straightforward ball over the top. Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot before halftime, giving the hosts hope of a turnaround. However, Brighton quickly regained the lead after the restart and sealed the result with a third goal, leaving United with no answers.

Fernandes’ Concerns

Kaoru Mitoma

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Fernandes shared his frustration with the team’s inability to maintain belief during difficult moments:

“We could have stayed in the game at 2-1, but we lacked belief in that moment. Then you concede again to make it 3-1, and everything becomes more difficult. What worries me the most is the lack of confidence we have at the moment to do the things we are capable of doing.”

Fernandes urged his teammates to back themselves and take risks for the benefit of the team:

“I don’t mind anyone losing the ball trying something to help the team. We need to trust ourselves to turn things around.”

A Broader Slump

The defeat marks United’s first loss of 2025 after encouraging results against Arsenal and Liverpool. However, it continues a troubling trend under Ruben Amorim, with just three wins in his 11 Premier League matches in charge and six defeats in the same span.

Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler praised United’s “world-class players” post-match, but their potential has yet to translate into consistent performances.

What’s Next for United?

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Amorim’s side. They face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday before challenging fixtures against Fulham, FCSB, and Crystal Palace in quick succession.

Outlook

United will need to regroup quickly, both mentally and tactically, to avoid further setbacks as they attempt to salvage their season.
