Long-Term Injury Concerns for Tomiyasu
Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is at risk of missing significant game time as the club is reportedly considering another knee surgery to address his ongoing fitness issues. The Japan international has been plagued by injuries over the past two seasons, limiting his impact on Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Tomiyasu initially suffered a serious knee injury in March 2023, forcing him to undergo surgery and miss the remainder of that campaign. Although he returned for the start of the 2023/24 season, a calf problem sidelined him for an extended period.
His struggles continued into 2024/25, missing Japan’s World Cup qualifiers in the summer due to persistent knee issues. Despite making a brief six-minute appearance against Southampton in October, he has not featured since.
Arsenal Considering Surgery as a Solution
According to The Daily Mail, there are growing concerns over Tomiyasu’s ability to maintain fitness, prompting Arsenal’s medical team to explore the possibility of another operation.
While surgery could provide a long-term fix, it would also rule Tomiyasu out for an extended period, further limiting Arteta’s defensive options.
Arsenal’s Defensive Crisis Deepens
Tomiyasu’s absence has been even more problematic given that Ben White has also been sidelined. As a result, Arteta has often relied on Thomas Partey to fill in at right-back, which is far from ideal.
At his best, Tomiyasu provides versatile defensive cover across the backline, making his absence a huge blow to Arsenal’s squad depth.
Could Arsenal Sell Tomiyasu?
Arsenal signed Tomiyasu from Bologna in 2021 for approximately £16 million. His current contract runs until 2026, with an option to extend until 2027. However, speculation is growing that the club could listen to offers this summer, especially if his injury concerns persist.
What’s Next for Tomiyasu and Arsenal?
With Arsenal aiming to compete at the highest level, Arteta faces a crucial decision:
- Should the club gamble on another surgery in hopes of securing Tomiyasu’s long-term fitness?
- Or should Arsenal consider selling the injury-prone defender to strengthen the squad elsewhere?
