Arsenal Reject Flamengo’s Offer for Jorginho Amid Contract Uncertainty

Arsenal have reportedly denied Flamengo’s attempt to sign Jorginho in the January transfer window, but the experienced midfielder is still expected to leave the club on a free transfer this summer. The 33-year-old Italian international has struggled for consistent game time under Mikel Arteta this season and is keen on securing more minutes elsewhere.

Jorginho’s Limited Role Under Arteta and Flamengo’s Interest

Despite making 20 appearances across all competitions, Jorginho has started just six Premier League matches—fewer than right-back Ben White, who has been sidelined with an injury for the past three months. With his contract expiring in June, Jorginho has been exploring his options, and Flamengo have emerged as a strong contender for his signature.

Reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest that Flamengo initiated discussions with Arsenal regarding a potential free transfer in January. However, the Gunners swiftly rejected the proposal, opting to keep the Champions League-winning midfielder until at least the end of the season.

Could Jorginho Still Leave Before Deadline Day?

While Arsenal remain firm on keeping Jorginho for now, there is still a small chance of a late move to Flamengo before the transfer window closes. The only scenario where Arsenal would allow Jorginho’s departure this winter is if they secure a suitable replacement in midfield—an outcome that appears highly unlikely.

Instead, Arsenal’s transfer focus has been on reinforcing their attack. The club has made multiple bids for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and even considered Evan Ferguson before his move to West Ham United. Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel remains on Arsenal’s radar, but they face competition from Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa for his signature.

What’s Next for Jorginho and Arsenal?

Jorginho Jorge Luiz

With his contract winding down, Jorginho has already started negotiating a pre-contract agreement with Flamengo ahead of a potential summer move, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. Unless Arsenal can convince him to extend his stay, the former Chelsea star will likely make his way to Rio de Janeiro as a free agent.
