Liverpool suffered a double blow in their FA Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle, with Joe Gomez forced off after just ten minutes. Manager Arne Slot admitted that the defender’s injury “didn’t feel good” but remains hopeful that it’s not a serious issue.

Joe Gomez Forced Off Early

Liverpool’s FA Cup campaign ended in disappointment after a 1-0 loss to Plymouth, but the night got even worse when Joe Gomez was taken off just ten minutes into the game. The versatile defender, captaining a heavily rotated Reds side, signaled to the bench that he couldn’t continue, fearing that pushing through might worsen his condition.

Ryan Hardie’s second-half penalty sealed the shock result, but Gomez’s early departure left Liverpool short at the back, especially with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté rested for the game.

Speaking after the match, Arne Slot provided an update on Gomez’s situation, confirming that the 27-year-old made the decision to come off to avoid aggravating a potential issue.

“I am not too sure if it was the same leg, but I haven’t had time to ask him,” Slot told reporters. “We all saw the moment he felt a bit insecure. He didn’t sprint back fully, and then he said, ‘I am not 100% sure, and I am afraid if I make one extra sprint, things will go wrong.'”

Slot added that while the injury does not appear to be a tear, Gomez’s discomfort was enough to warrant caution.

Liverpool’s Squad Rotation Backfires

The Reds were already missing key defensive figures, and Curtis Jones, who was initially on the bench, informed Slot on the morning of the match that he hadn’t fully recovered from training. As a result, Liverpool ended up with more youngsters on the pitch than originally planned.

Despite these setbacks, Slot believes the squad had enough quality to get a better result:

“There was still enough quality on the pitch to perform better than this,” he admitted.

Isaac Mabaya replaced Gomez early in the game but was later sacrificed as Liverpool chased an equalizer. The defeat raises concerns about the squad’s depth as they continue their fight on multiple fronts this season.

What’s Next for Gomez and Liverpool?

With crucial Premier League fixtures on the horizon, Liverpool fans will be anxiously awaiting further updates on Gomez’s condition. Should Slot have taken fewer risks with squad rotation? Could this injury impact Liverpool’s defensive stability in the coming weeks?
