Van Dijk’s Exceptional Form Surprises Liverpool Boss

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his admiration for Virgil van Dijk, admitting that he was taken aback by the defender’s incredible ability this season. The 33-year-old Dutch center-back has put his injury woes behind him and has been a key figure in Liverpool’s dominance at the top of the Premier League table.

Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp, revealed that he didn’t expect Van Dijk to be as impressive as he has been. Speaking to Football Focus, he acknowledged that his perception of Van Dijk changed significantly since working with him at Liverpool.

“Everybody here in England would tell you that Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world. In Holland, he got a bit more criticism than he gets over here in England.”

Slot continued:

“I was, in a very positive way, surprised how good he was on the ball and how he could play football through the lines. From the first day, I was like, ‘Wow, this is definitely another level that I’m used to.’ But people in England were used to this.”

Liverpool’s Unexpected Dominance Under Slot

Arne Slot also admitted that he did not anticipate such an immediate impact at Liverpool. Despite replacing a legendary manager in Jurgen Klopp, Slot has guided Liverpool to the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League standings.

“You don’t think after 20 games we will have that many points, and I wasn’t expecting us to be top with the margin we have,” Slot said. “It’s always nice to be up there, but nobody would have expected this. I’m the last person who would have expected Manchester City to have such a bad run.”

With a six-point lead over Arsenal and a game in hand, Liverpool’s performances have exceeded expectations, making them strong contenders for the Premier League title.

Van Dijk’s Uncertain Future at Liverpool

Despite his phenomenal season, Van Dijk’s long-term future at Liverpool remains uncertain. The Dutch captain’s contract expires at the end of the season, and no extension has been confirmed yet.

When asked about his future, Van Dijk responded:

“I have no idea how many more appearances I will make for Liverpool. How many left this season? Hopefully, those are guaranteed, and then I don’t know what the future will bring.”
