Key Midfielders Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia Sidelined
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has offered concerning updates about midfield duo Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia, both of whom missed Chelsea’s crucial Premier League win over Wolves on Monday. The victory was a significant boost for Chelsea, lifting them back into the top four.
However, the absence of Fernandez and Lavia left the squad stretched thin in midfield, forcing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to make his first Premier League start for the club. Both players suffered muscle injuries in the previous match against Bournemouth, where Lavia had been handed a rare start due to Moises Caicedo temporarily filling in at right-back.
No Clear Timeline for Recovery
Maresca revealed that Lavia’s injury is more serious than Fernandez’s, but there is still no clear timeline for when either player will return.
“Romeo is more important than Enzo,” Maresca stated. “We don’t know yet how long they are going to be out. Hopefully not too long. [It’s] muscle fatigue or muscle problem. We need to wait a little bit.”
Fernandez has been a key figure for Chelsea this season, often wearing the captain’s armband. Meanwhile, Lavia’s limited appearances have been plagued by injuries, with his outing against Bournemouth being his first Premier League start since recovering from a previous hamstring issue.
Chelsea’s Midfield Depth Tested

Without Fernandez and Lavia, Chelsea’s midfield options appear limited. Dewsbury-Hall stepped up against Wolves, but doubts remain about whether he can consistently meet Chelsea’s high standards.
The injury crisis isn’t limited to the midfield. Defenders Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana are still sidelined. However, there is positive news as Levi Colwill has been declared fit and is expected to feature in Chelsea’s upcoming clash against Manchester City.
Chelsea’s Upcoming Challenges
Chelsea will face a stern test against Manchester City this weekend. With key players missing, the team will need to rely on its remaining squad depth to navigate this challenging period.
