- Man Utd defeated Arsenal on penalties to advance in the FA Cup.
- A marked improvement from their Premier League loss to the Gunners in December.
- United played over an hour with ten men after Diogo Dalot’s red card.
Ruben Amorim credited Manchester United’s “different spirit” for their dramatic FA Cup third-round win against Arsenal on Sunday. The Red Devils triumphed on penalties despite being reduced to ten men early in the second half after Diogo Dalot was sent off.
United’s victory comes just weeks after a disappointing 2-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal at the Emirates, a game in which they conceded twice from corners. Amorim’s side has since shown signs of improvement, starting the new year with a strong performance against Liverpool at Anfield and now eliminating Arsenal in a hard-fought contest.
Amorim Praises United’s Grit and Growth

Speaking after the match, Amorim highlighted the team’s enhanced mentality and tactical discipline compared to their December encounter with Arsenal:
“I think we played, especially in the first half, better [than] in the first game [against Arsenal]. We were better in set-pieces, more aggressive. We showed a different spirit, even with ten men. We are improving on that aspect.”
Amorim acknowledged the early challenges in controlling the game:
“I think we had a lot of difficulties in the beginning of the game to control the ball and suffered—not big opportunities, but we suffered running after the ball, especially when Arsenal switched play or pressed high.
“But then, we took the game to a different level in terms of aggressivity. That is a very good thing. We managed to score, and I felt in that moment we were improving with the ball. But after the red card, it was really hard on us. We suffered together, defended very well, and dealt with Arsenal’s opportunities.”
A Special Day for United
Despite the physical toll and Arsenal’s pressure, Amorim believed the team’s determination made the difference:
“The players were really tired, but I felt since the first minute that today was our day. I also felt a strong connection with our fans and staff. It was a very good day for us in that aspect.
“Of course, we need to improve the way we play football, but today we proved our strength in difficult circumstances.”
