The Crisis Surrounding Dani Olmo and Pau Victor
Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has admitted that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Dani Olmo and Pau Victor has left him and his teammates concerned.
The situation arose after Barcelona was able to temporarily register Olmo and Victor for the first six months of the season due to Andreas Christensen’s long-term injury. However, their registrations expired on 31 December. Despite Barcelona’s efforts to secure the necessary budget adjustments to accommodate their wages, La Liga and the Spanish football association (RFEF) rejected their plea to re-register the duo, citing missed deadlines.
H3: Why Olmo and Victor Can’t Play
Barcelona claimed that income from a VIP seating deal could cover the players’ wages, but this confirmation came after the 31 December deadline. According to La Liga rules, once a player’s registration has expired, they cannot be registered again with the same club during the same season.
As a result, Dani Olmo and Pau Victor were excluded from Barcelona’s squad for Saturday’s Copa del Rey clash against fourth-tier Barbastro, which the Catalan giants won 4-0.
H2: Ronald Araujo Speaks Out
Making his return from injury in the cup match, Ronald Araujo addressed the issue during a post-match interview with Movistar+.
“We are a little worried because they are two very important players for us,” Araujo said. “It is a subject that is in bad taste for our teammates, but we hope it can be resolved.”
The captain also added:
“As captain, I have tried to reassure them.”
H3: Dani Olmo’s Perspective
Dani Olmo, a Euro 2024 winner, has remained composed despite the chaos. His contract includes a clause allowing him to leave as a free agent in situations like this. However, his agent has reiterated that Olmo has no desire to leave Barcelona, even amid significant interest from Premier League clubs.
H2: Barcelona’s Last-Ditch Effort
Barcelona remains hopeful of retaining both Olmo and Victor. The club plans to escalate the matter to the Higher Sports Council (CSD), a Spanish government body overseeing sports affairs. The council will hear Barcelona’s appeal on Tuesday, 7 January. However, a final resolution may take some time.
For now, Barcelona’s squad continues to grapple with the uncertainty, hoping for a favorable outcome to retain two key players.
