Loyalty Over Big-Club Ambitions
Matheus Cunha had no shortage of offers during the January transfer window, with Arsenal and Manchester United both eager to sign the talented Brazilian forward. However, despite the lure of Champions League football and a lucrative contract, the Wolves striker chose to stay and help his team in their battle against relegation.
Cunha, who has been enjoying the best season of his career with 13 Premier League goals, admitted that leaving Wolves at such a critical moment never crossed his mind. “I had a lot of offers, but I wouldn’t have felt right leaving in the middle of a relegation fight,” he told The Guardian.
A Crucial Decision Amid Wolves’ Struggles
When Gary O’Neil was sacked in December, Wolves were struggling in 19th place, and their survival in the Premier League seemed uncertain. Many expected Cunha to follow the path of other stars who leave struggling clubs for bigger opportunities, yet he remained committed to Wolves.
His decision to stay was rewarded in February when he signed a new contract, further solidifying his bond with the club. “Sometimes, all we want in life is affection,” he said, emphasizing how the club and fans have given him the support he needed. “People think we have everything, but we’re human too. Wolves brought back my joy for football.”
Since then, Wolves have climbed to 17th place, creating a nine-point gap from the relegation zone. While survival is not yet secured, the team looks far more stable than they did earlier in the season.
What’s Next for Cunha?

While Cunha has committed his immediate future to Wolves, he has made it clear that he has higher ambitions. Reports suggest that his new contract includes a £62.5m release clause, which could make him a major transfer target again in the summer.
Now, with Wolves edging closer to safety, Cunha is already thinking about the next stage of his career. “I’ve said before, I want to take the next step. I want to fight for trophies and be part of something bigger. I know I have the potential for that,” he stated.
Will Cunha remain at Wolves next season, or will a top club finally convince him to move?
